PLAY ON! Character Analysis

Discuss the details of your character.
First, give us the data (Name, Age, Origin, etc)
Next, give us the low-down on your character's Back-Story.  What do they really want, and why?  Give us 2 different revelations that the script doesn't overtly reveal.
Then, in the comments, you can tell us why you made those 2 choices.

  1. My character is a fifty-ish year old man who is happily married to his wife, Polly. His name is Henry Benish, and he is an actor for the local theater.

Henry Benish seems to have been one of the founding members of the theater, along with his wife Saul Watson, and Geraldine Dunbar. All he seems to want to do is have this play go off without a hitch, so that the patrons of the theatre will continue to pay to see the shows, and keep all of the players working.

    (1) Henry as a person is very simple, it would seem. He lives his life as he wants to, playing parts at the local theatre along with his dear wife. He's made friends within the community, and he seems content. In regards to his wife, Polly, he's very submissive to her, but no so much to create an imbalance. Henry is the temperament to Polly's short fuse. (2) As an actor, Henry is refined, and a veteran of the performing arts, and this theater especially. He portrays his part with dignity, and the hope that the other players around him will ply their part as well, so that everything can go according to plan. Towards the end, however, he just wants to live through the ordeal.

    1. I honestly think they chose the right person for you. During the cold read, it sounded like that part was made for you, and you play it very well.

  2. Aggie Manville, adult (25-55)
What Aggie wants is for everything to go the right way during the show. She wants this because as stage manager, this is her job and she doesn't want to be looked down upon if something goes wrong.
Prior to this play, Aggie was in the paratroops which meant that she was thrown into the middle of things and expected to know what to do and how to do it the right way.
Aggie also doesn't really like when others mess things up or things just don't go right because that messes up her job.

  3. The character I'm playing is a 15 year old girl named Marla Smith aka Smitty, who just wants to get through the play so she can go home and study for her exam. In the play, Smitty warns the director and everybody else that her strict mother doesn't like for her to be out late, in any inappropriate play, and that she must study for her biology exam, because she's close to failing the class.
Smitty is the supporting player. She plays Dorris who is a maid, and she's very excited for the play, even though she got cold feet on opening night. She's also not good with remembering her lines or knowing when to come in to say her lines. However at the end of the day, she is only a teenager, wanting to go home to study for a test.

  4. the character I am playing is Saul Watson and he is 40 years old. He seeks attention and loves to be comedic at very wrong moments. He also gets very rude at times just to seek humor. so basically hes a jerk that everybody loves and can't really hate.
In the play, my the character is "Doctor Rex Forbes" and is a villain. what he wants is to bring a bright setting into the room with comedic responses.

  5. My character from the production Play On! Is Polly Benish. Polly is a mature aged woman who is married to her husband Henry Benish. Polly Benish plays the role of Lady Margaret in the play “Murder Most Foul” inside of the play Play On! Poly can be described as a defensive diva who is on the larger size.

Polly is definitely a bit of a diva and wants everything to be about her. She is always wanting to add more lines to her part so she can shine even more. She is very controlling and wants everyone to follow her order and command even though she’s not in charge. Along with this, Polly also has a pretty bad temper. Sometimes she jumps to the conclusion of people making fun of her wait when they really aren’t at all.

Even though the script doesn’t directly say much about Polly I can make a lot inferences about her. To me Polly seems very insecure. Which is strange because she seems like she has a very demanding type of personality, but she is also offended so easily. It even seems hard for her to accept compliments due to her insecurities. Along with this I can also determine that Polly is also acts very immature for her age. She is always trying to kiss up to Phyllis and make herself seem like she’s higher than everyone else which is really unnecessary and to me also quite immature. She is in her 50s, but yet she acts like every other younger character.

  6. My character is name is Billy Carewe he is a very young bachelor in his early 20s. Billy is single and ready to take on any new relationship that comes in his life ,even if the woman is a bit of an airhead.

Billy is new to the theater along with a few others and ready to get the play done and over with he's very easy to get along with he's even formed a bond with some of the founding members of the community theater like Saul and the Benishes Henry and Polly .

Billy is a talented young man who can be a bit of wild child ,especially when he drinks alcohol with Saul ,but he is also the type of person who's all about his craft even if he forgets a line or two .

  7. Phyllis Montague is a 50 year old woman. She’s unmarried, lives alone, and has an abundance of free time. She’s oblivious to other people’s opinions of her, and she doesn’t realize why constantly changing people’s parts in a play, that’s about to go on, is a bad idea.

Phyllis is a wannabe writing star, and a try hard intellectual. She wants to be recognized within the community, even though her talents are average at best. Though she enjoys theatre, she can’t seem to grasp even the simplest concepts about it. Especially why she can’t have total control and dictate even the smallest aspects of her already chosen script.

Though all together, Phyllis is a very upbeat and has no ill will against anyone, she doesn’t understand why her actions could come off as eccentric or even rude, like constantly rewriting a larger part for Polly. When all's said and done, Phyllis just wants her play to be as perfect as possible, and to live up to the audience's expectations.

  8. My character's name is Geraldine Dunbar but she goes by "Gerry". She is a 30 year old director at her community's theatre. She was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois thriving in her local theatre, "House Theatre of Chicago" at the age of 8.

Ever since she moved to Boston, Massachusetts she's become known around the city for her flourishing theatre department that she took over. The patrons of the city have come accustomed to her traditions and it's the time of year for the annual mystery play and she just wants it to be a success. After all, Phyllis Montague is letting her do it with no cost.

1.) Gerry's husband, Frank, doesn't really care so much about her Theatre life and if it's not convenient for him, he'll make sure she knows that. This play is her only chance to prove to him that her work in theatre actually makes a difference in her 'players' and the audience. This will either make or break her marriage.

2.) The Theatre Department is in 10,000 dollars in debt. The actors all believe everything is fine and that's not the case. Having this show be a hit is the goal so she can safely AND quietly pay what they owe.

  9. My character for Play On! is Louise Peary. She is 35, and the sound-and-lighting-and-scenic technician of the play. She is always wearing plaid flannel, and has her tools if she needs them.

Louise is a real hard worker. She has to do lights, sounds, basically all the crew work, and she stills find time to make everyone coffee. Even though it is not that good. She is always ready to do some work, she also tries to be one step ahead with what needs to be done. She always wants to be good at her job.

She was a nerd when she was younger, and never really fit in. She is very nervous about messing up, because this is very important to her. She is also really smart, because she can do all the crew work by herself.
