  2. My performance at the Dickson County tournament was definitely not my best. My piece wasn't the best in the first place, and I continued to change it as the time drained. I didn't have it memorized until Friday, and wasn't entirely sure that I could perform it until Saturday on the bus.

My scores were all 10's, breaking Febish's previously set record for worst scores. I placed dead last. 10's, however, are given when you don't perform. I walked into the performance room, waited for the first person to perform, and then got up to perform myself. And immediately ran to the bathroom to puke. While some of this was genuine sickness, as I'd been sick for most of the week before, part of it was probably anxiety from not being sure if I was completely prepared.

I'm definitely going to be more prepared for the next competition. I've already started looking for pieces and researching tips on how to get better in events that I'm interested in. I know that I haven't been the best the last few weeks and I want to get better and work hard enough to go to state.

  3. I went into the tournament with the piece "The true story of the three little pigs". I was under the impression that it was like sitting on a bedside reading to a child. Watching other people I quickly realized that I knew nothing about it. There were so many good pieces.

My times were all around 6 minutes. I did not get any terrible scores but the competition was hard in this category.I got a 95, 92 and an 89 I believe. I feel good about it but I know I could do better. My composite score was 11. I am glad that I did it at all personally. I had two 4's and a 3. My final place was just below the top 10.

What I discovered during this was that there is always something to add. All the finalists had like actions for each word. They also had very exciting characters. My character had a personality but it was not as extravagant. I learned what sound a door makes and it was great and I will now add that into anything with a door. I also want to work to find a piece that fits me. I look into things but I have not found one that I think I can do with passion. I see others and think that I could bring something to that but can never find that piece for myself. Overall I am glad I went and it was great and we got sweepstakes so it was worth it. Coming up I will really focus in and do my best.

  4. Last Saturday, I performed in the competition at Dickson county. It was a very nice learning experience. I was able to observe people in poetry, and learn what they did to make their piece great. It was a very different experience than doing DI the last competition I went to.

So, I placed 7th in all of my rooms. Meaning I didn't do well but according to all of the note from the judges, I did pretty well. I would've done better if I had spent more time on it. If had it picked out in the first place, but I would have gotten more time on it. This was because I was very focused on fablefest and getting the script done. yes, I know that it's no excuse for not working on it for at least 10 minutes.

With all of this in mind, I plan to take this to the next competition, work on this over the Christmas break to make it better, and at least break with it.

  5. I am proud of the work I did at competition. I am particularly proud of my prose piece. But there are simple things I could do in order to break.

I placed 8th overall but I had the same small score as the sixth place person. I placed 4th, 2nd, and 1st in my rooms. Although I didn't place there are some critiques that I got that will put my piece over the top.

I was told to put my hair up and I did and then I placed higher so having my hair out of my face ranked me higher and I will put it up for every competition. Secondly, my transitions between characters needs to be more obvious because a judge thought I was just shifting my weight. The last critique I got was that my timing and tempo with my piece needs to be faster when I am transitioning. These are simple things that are easy to fix for next competition.

  6. The last competition I attended was at Dickson County. I participated in Storytelling and for it being my first time in this category, I did fairly well. I was ranked third, fourth, and fourth. The piece I performed was Rumpelstiltskin. I did not break but my final place was in the mid teens (15th place and so forth).

My approach for this tournament started off bad. I wasn't putting a lot of time or energy into the story outside of class. I didn't even memorize the piece until the week of. After memorizing I realized it had a lot of potential when I was two days from competition. One thing I learned while being at Dickson was how animated Storytelling really is. Dontavis, LaBrea, Kaia, and I were all shocked by how much movement is actually involved. The judges all said my voice is naturally made for this but I need to increase my energy level. I also learned I am my worst enemy and I shouldn't doubt my talent.

For me to get to state I need to be more invested. I need to search for better kid stories. I need to spend time on my piece and perform it over and over until I know it backwards and forwards. The quicker I memorize it, the more time I'll have to get feedback and correct whatever I need to before competition. I need to find a piece I'm confident in and enjoy performing. I can be just as good as the rest of them if I put in the work.
