Discuss your choices for the upcoming District Competition:
1) Division
2) Selection

What challenges do you have to meet to make your performance compelling?

  1. For our district competition I will be in Duet Acting. My partner for duet acting is Jasmin Mendez. Duet Acting is a 10 minuet selection of a play or literary merit. It is a scene between two characters.

Our piece is The Odd Couple by Neil Simon. We are doing the, "Through the Damn Cup!' scene. I will be playing Olive Madison. Jasmin will be playing Florence Ungar. So, while we have done this selection in the past, we have not portrayed these characters before.

  3. Febish and I will be competing in duo acting. Our selection is "They Fell," form "Almost Maine." The challenges we are facing with the piece would have to be chemistry between us. We've never performed together. So well have to work on being in sync with each other and act and react. I feel that sense we are other strong actor we can really challenge each other to do great with the piece we have. By critiquing one another on how a certain phrase should be said and facials will definitely strengthen our characterization and make the characters more compelling.

  4. For districts, I will be returning with my poetry piece, Acceptance, which contains two poems. Dear Straight People, by Denice Frohman, and God is Gay, by Elliot Darrow. Taking this poems to competition again is risky, to say the least. I'm honestly not sure how the audience will react. Namely, the judge. Regardless, I think I can do well with this piece, as long as I commit to perfecting it.

In order to do the above, I'll be working on my pacing. Now that I've got my whole piece memorized (something I had neglected to do the first time) I'll be less reliant on the script, and can focus more on my delivery, rather than just getting the right words out of my mouth. In addition to my pacing, I'll be adding some sort of movement. All of the other performances had movements that made their piece more interesting, and I think that might be the key reason that I was marked last place in all of my rooms. This time around, I've added a few movements that add to the comedic truth of my poems, and I think that will really bring the audience in, and get them to listen to what I have to say.

All in all, I'm ready to take this piece to competition. I absolutely adore the poems I have selected, and I want to make it the best performance I've ever done.

  5. I am performing in duet acting. I am performing with Rebecca in "The Odd Couple " By Neil Simon.

I am struggling with becoming my character. My character is the opposite of who I am. I am not sure what mannerisms to have just yet. I also don't know what voice I should use. All in all I am struggling with characterization.

  6. For the District Competition, I am doing a duet acting piece called Steel Magnolias by Robert Harling. My partner is Kayla Sibert. Our scene from the play is the wedding and Christmas scene. I am playing as M’lynn and Kayla will be Shelby.

Some challenges I have are trying to create an embedded intro and getting Kayla to work with the piece. She doesn't believe that she can do it and do it well but I believe that if she puts her mind to it she can do much more than she believes.

  7. For the District Competition, I will be performing "The Women of Lockerbie" by Deborah Brevoort. I will be in dramatic interpretation. To make my performance more compelling, would be doing dramatic pauses and dragging out my words. Also, making my intro more capturing. Another thing would be look at the audience more and make it seem like I'm asking them the question.

  8. I will not be competing in districts; however, I will be doing congress at State. Currently, I am working on writing four legislation that I will submit to Congress and then I will have to write a minimum of six speeches for Congress.
