Theatre 3: A Dream Deferred

HARLEM
(A Dream Deferred)
--Langston Hughes

What happens to a dream deferred?
      Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
      Or fester like a sore—
      And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
      Or crust and sugar over—
      like a syrupy sweet?
      Maybe it just sags
      like a heavy load.
      Or does it explode?

Discuss: “A Dream Deferred”
1) Explain what is meant by “A Dream Deferred”
2) Give an example of this from the story “A Raisin in the Sun.”
3) Give an example from your life.
4) Now that you have shared, what do you want your audience to do
when it comes to their own dreams?

  2. 2. When Mama told Walter could not go through with his dream to sell liquor. Walter felt that his was being nor heard nor understood by his family. All he wanted was to make them happy and he felt as if he wasn't being heard as the man of the household.

  5. 1) “A Dream Deferred” means a dream postponed or unsuccessful.
    2) An example of this in the story “A Raisin in the Sun” is how Walter wanted to create his own liquor store but the money in order to help him do that was stolen, that is a dream that is postponed because of a major setback, “A Dream Deferred”.
    3) A dream deferred in my life is when I wanted to pursue my last schools' selection of Biomedical science classes but I had to move here because of our struggle with money and the cost of living.
    4) I would want my audience to know that if they have a dream and it seems too far away or too difficult to achieve, don't listen to anyone that'll tell you that it's impossible, have the courage to pursue yours it.

  7. 1) "Deferred" means to delay or postpone something.

    2) An example of a dream being deferred in A Raisin in the Sun could be when Beneatha was wanting to go to college to become a doctor. But, then then fell for Agasai, dream deferred. Next, she had no money for college since Walter gave it to Willy, dream deferred. Agasai asked Beneatha to move to Africa with him, dream deferred.

    3) An example from my life of a dream being deferred is when I wanted to have my parents all to myself and keep being their only child. But my sister, Emma, was born. I hated the fact that I wasn't getting their attention anymore and became aggressive. But, I regret ever having negative thoughts about her. I love Emma and would do anything for her.

    4) I want my audience to realize if you want your dreams to become a reality, you have to take those steps to get there. But, sometimes, something from outside of your dream could push its way in and make you feel like your dream is ruined. But what actually happened is that an even bigger one was created.

  8. A dream deferred is a dream that you had to postpone or give up on.
An example of a dream deferred in A Raisin In The Sun is when Walter gave Bobo that money for their investment and Willie stole all of it. That's when all the family's dreams were deferred because they needed that money.
A dream deferred in my life is when I wanted to audition for the musical but I was unprepared and I was gonna ask to be part of it somehow but it got cancelled before I could say anything.
I want my audience to reach for their dreams. If it has to be postponed come back to it. I believe in working hard to get to your dream. It's not up to anyone but themselves to make that dream their and come true.

  9. 1. A dream deferred is means you had a dream something or someone had something to do with postponing that dream or that dream stopping because of what ever reason, like in the movie/play "A raisin in the sun " by Lorraine Hansberry. the lead "Walter" wanted to start his own business but he didn't have any money but when he did someone scammed him and took off with all the money. That is a dream deferred. "Beneatha" she wanted to become a doctor but she had to go to collage but that cost money and when the mama got the money, walter had a dream and the money was gone and caused beneatha's dream to be deferred.

In my life i can say i had a dream deferred because when i was in elementary i ran track and i loved it because it was fun and i just loved the fact that i was better than the other kids, but i ended up moving schools and the school that is was at did not have a track team, the only thing they had was basketball and then i just gave up and called it a day. So for anyone who is reading this don't make the same mistake that i made, don't just give up, cause i promise you that your dreams will come true if you stick to it and focus on getting there, because i could of joined again when i was in middle school, So keep your dreams with you at all times and don't be scared of a dream that you have. Don't be an example of a dream deferred.

  11. "A Dream Deferred" is a dream that you've thought about, but it's put off or delayed. Like something has happened to where you can't achieve your dream so it has to be delayed.

An example from "The Raisin In The Sun" is that Beneatha Walter's sister wants to be a Doctor, it's her dream to become one to help people. But she can't attend med school because it costs a lot of money to go there. So she had to put off her dream. So now she has "A Dream Deferred."

An example from my life is that I want to be a successful Actress , but I have struggles talking out loud and being nervous, so I might have to put my dream on hold until I have the confidence and feel more comfortable when I'm acting to be a successful Actress.

I want my audience to try their very best for their dream to make it happen. And if it doesn't happen , then that's okay they can come back to it when it's the right time and place. And I want them to have the courage and confidence to reach their dream whether there's difficult struggles at the time.

  12. A dream deferred is a dream that was taken away from you, or harder to reach than expected. In the play "A Raisin In the sun", Mama got a insurance check for $10,000. She used part of the money to buy a house for her and her family, wanted a portion to pay for benne's schooling, and trusted her son Walter with the rest. When she gave the money to Walter she told him to stop by the bank and but $3000 in for his sister's schooling. However Walter gave all of his money to the man he was doing business with. This man then took off with walter's money and left the family with nothing. Something similar to this has happened in my life. My mother worked really hard for a long time to make sure my family could live a comfortable life. Just when we got to where we have always wanted to be. Our money was spent faster than we could use it for what we really needed and we were back to where we started. It setback my family and we didn't get as far as we thought we would .

  14. A Dream Deferred is a dream or goal you had that was not successful at the time. An example of a dream that was deferred in the play "A Rasin in the Sun" was when Walter used Beneatha's college money for his business. In the end, Walter had his money taken and wasn't able to start his business. This also messed up Beneatha's dream as well because she wanted to go to college. Since Walter took her college money she can't become a doctor.

In my life is when I didn't try out for the basketball team for my freshman. It even shows now because I have not tried out for the basketball team at all. Another thing that happened in my life is that when I went into my first play, the Christmas Story, I wanted to get a good role. I did... if you count being one of the elves (pretty much crew) a good part. It is but since I didn't do well I didn't get a better role.

I want the audience who is reading this to just go for your dreams and don't stop because, in the end, it will all be worth it. Yes, there will be bumps in the way and it's going to get harder and harder as you progress, but in the end, it will all be worth it.
