Theatre 4: A Dream Deferred

HARLEM
(A Dream Deferred)
--Langston Hughes

What happens to a dream deferred?
      Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
      Or fester like a sore—
      And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
      Or crust and sugar over—
      like a syrupy sweet?
      Maybe it just sags
      like a heavy load.
      Or does it explode?

Discuss: “A Dream Deferred”
1) Explain what is meant by “A Dream Deferred”
2) Give an example of this from the story “A Raisin in the Sun.”
3) Give an example from your life.
4) Now that you have shared, what do you want your audience to do
when it comes to their own dreams?

  6. 1) A deferred dream is when their dream has to be postpone or delayed.
    2) An example about a deferred dream in the "raisin in the sun", is when Ruth wants to have a bigger house for her son and her new baby whom she is pregnant with.
    3) An example from my life would be my dream is to join the navy reserves after high school but to do it while I am in college so it'll help pay. But since I broke my had, I have to put that on hold until I am 100% healed and can do pt with them.
    4) I say just do it. It sounds cliche and grant it is, but the only way to make it happen is for you to do something about it.

    1. I agree with your response to #4 , nothing can come true or happen unless you put your mind to it and accomplish the goal.

  7. A dream deferred is when a dream is delayed or thrown off of track. An example of when dream is deferred in "A Raisin in the Sun" is when Beneatha finds outs she can't attend college. An example of a dream deferred in my life is when I was 13 I broke my foot during a cheer competition and ever since thenI've been to scared to do many flips and tricks. If you have a dream and you know you are capable of doing it don't let one mishao throw you off the course of acheiving that dream.

  8. "A Dream Deferred" mean everyone has a dream that they want to come true but some people have to put their dreams on standby.

in "A Raisin In The Sun"by Lorraine Hansberry an example of "A Dream Deferred" is when Lena received the $10,000 dollar insurance check from Walter Younger, the dad of Walter Lee Younger, Lena decided to put a down payment on a house for Travis to grow up for when he is a man.

From my life, "A Dream Deferred" would be whenever I was still dancing I wanted to be able to aerial so I went to go and try and land my aerial but instead of landing on my feet I fell on to a mat and landed on my right shoulder and it hurt so I was scared of doing an aerial. After a couple of weeks I started to practice doing an aerial and know I can land my aerial.

What I want my audience to do whenever it comes to their own dreams is that no matter what you can do whatever your heart desires. If you fail and are scared to try again then take a break and try again whenever you are ready. Never do something that you don't want to do.

  9. A dream deferred is a dream put off or given up on. The poem discusses what happens to a dream once you stop chasing it.

In "A Raisin In the Sun," Beneatha gave up on her dream of being a doctor when Walter lost the rest of the money. This is an example of a dream deferred. She no longer believed in the dream so she gave up on chasing it and was going to settle for a "normal job."

An example of a dream deferred from my life is my dream of being a singer. When I was little I used to sing with my little karaoke machine and think I wanted to be famous when I grew up. Now that I'm older I realize that was stupid because I can not sing, but I do have more reasonable goals. If I were to give up on going to college for psychology, that would be another dream deferred.

When it comes to your dreams, do not give up. It is okay to realize when a dream is not for you anymore, but having at least one that you do not give up on is very important. Everyone needs a dream to motivate them through life.

    1. I agree with you that Beneatha's dream to become a doctor is a dream deferred because if Walter Lee would have not spent the money than Beneatha could live out her dream but since Walter Lee spent the money for a liquor store than Beneatha's dream is a dream deferred.

  10. A dream deferred means that you have neglected or put aside your dreams.

An example of a dream deferred in "Raisin in the Sun" is when Walter didn't think he would have the money for the liquor store. He started to spiral out of control and many ways and basically gave up hope all together.

My dream deferred is my dream of being something more significant than dark sister NUMBER TWO, like maybe even number one or I don't know, a character with a name. But all jokes aside I can work to expand myself as an actress and ensure to show my true capabilities.

You should chase your dreams and fight for them to be a reality. You have to put actions to words to make them a reality.
