Theatre 2: CLUE Design Challenges

Discuss the challenges and limitations our Theater Space has when it

comes to designing and building the set for CLUE. What is one innovative idea  that you have to help overcome this challenge.

  1. Our theatre stage has measurements in odd numbers instead of even numbers. There's also the fact that we have more room going back to front than side to side. If we were to build a two story set we would have to figure how to light it and how big it would be. There is the problem that since the measurements are odd numbers it would be harder to build. There are ways we could get around some of these issues.

We could build parts of the set that are movable and apply it to the places that are acted only once. That could also make more room for the areas that are mentioned throughout the whole play and then bring it back when they run through every room. We would have to figure out how to transition to make moving the room as smooth as possible. We could make it part of the play as a comedic effect. We could also make all the parts of the set smaller than the measurements of the theatre in even numbers.

There's some things that could be solved along the way because even as we build the set more problems could come up that weren't a part of the original problem. The stage is probably even but all the stuff around it and the fact that people didn't measure right could be why it's odd. We could be on the safe side and just make the set in even measurements.

    1. I agree with that building a two story set could be a solution but we have to make sure the light is big enough to cover up that area.

  2. The challenges and limitations our theater space has when it comes to designing and building the set is actually knowing how big each room should be. Knowing we only have a small amount of space and that our measurements came out as odd numbers, it would be more complicated to build, so we need to know exactly how many rooms can we fit in that small amount of area based on there size. We also have to make sure we have to have enough room for transitioning in between scenes.

Most importantly before we build or start planning anything we have to know exactly how big the stage is because some people have different measurements. Another problem is that we have more room going to the back wall that we cant use because nobody can see back there than to side to side.

We can solve some of these problems by building set and movable pieces of the play by even numbers instead of odd numbers. Space wise we also could build temporary rooms that pops up in the play maybe once or twice into others, Like a sliding door. Also we could just place a dining table in one of the rooms and that'll be the dining room for that scene.

    1. I agree that knowing the measurements is extremely beneficial. As well as knowing how big and how many rooms we would need. I really like your ideas on using something that spins or pops up temporarily.

    2. I agree with the whole transitioning between scenes and stuff. We need to see how the layout of the play works with the layout of the stage.

  3. There are many problems to designing the set for Clue. The first problem is the odd number of feet of working space. Another problem is making rooms and spaces big enough for the scenes. One final problem is the placement of most of the rooms to fit onstage.

Before we start building, we have to discuss where things will go. We also have to think of where they will be placed. This has to be put together in a specifically organized way. With certain rooms needing to be connected, the. have to be put in a certain way.

With some of these problems, we have to separate the stage into different parts. We could also have opening panels. That way, there would be less rooms to build. The dining room can be in the pit like we have previously discussed.

    1. I like how you brought up the acting space. Because, not only do we need to make enough rooms but we also need to have enough space for 8 people to be able to act in that area.

    2. I also agree with the fact we could have opening panels because that could save us some space that we could use for other things.

  4. When it came to designing the set for our CLUE play, there came many issues/problems that had to be taken into consideration when laying out, and creating our ground plan.

When we measured out the different lengths and widths of different parts of the stage and backstage, we found out that not everything was perfectly even or was divisible by a foot.

With the new information we had about the space we were working with, we thought about many different ground plans but decided on the idea to try and make a two story set with the second story's rooms being a bit slanted inward so we're able to fit the many rooms needed for the scenes.

    2. I agree, I think that the odd measurements could be a problem, because something might have to be a little smaller than others.

  5. Our theater has multiple limitations and challenges when it comes to building a set for Clue. Even when trying to design a set this is a challenge because of the factors we need to work with. The major limitation we have besides budget is the space of our theater. The theater has plenty of space in the back to work with but not as much space up front. We need to think of how to build a set that still has enough space to act in without being crowded and having all of the necessary rooms that are needed.

From the ground plan we know that we have about 13' to work with down center stage. What we also need to keep in mind is the height of the arch. If we want to build a two story set we need to keep in mind how high we can actually make it without hitting the top of the arch. Along with that we need to make sure that we would be able to light the "first" floor as well as the second and have everything be seen by the audience.

An idea that I had to overcome these challenges/limitations was to make a curved set / a two story set. With the limited space building up instead of out could also help. Another thing we could try is to have some of the pieces spin so we can utilize as much space as possible.

    1. I agree with needing to build a set that is big enough for our stage but not be too crowded.

  6. One challenge that I can easily see when it comes to building the set for Clue would be the general space we are limited to. we need to build a set that is big enough for 8 different rooms. We also need to have it be two stories. So that leads to another problem, we have to make the set high enough for the tallest actor but short enough to be able to have a second story straight above it.

These two problems are an important aspect of building the set because this needs to be built in a matter of 6-7 weeks. We need to build the set as sturdy as we possibly can in order for the actors to run and bounce and do everything they need to do whenever they need to.

Now that I am aware of the challenges we have to face in order to meet this goal of building the set properly, we can now address these issues. For the height problem we could measure the tallest actor in the play and build the set according to them and same with the width.

    1. I agree I think space could be an issue, especially with the number of rooms we need to have.

  7. I think a few challenges we would have would be trying to make as many rooms that we need but making them small enough for them all to fit on the stage yet big enough for all the needed actors to stand inside all while being visible to the audience.

Theses problems could be fixed by simple measurements and math and determining which ground plan was best for our set design.

Now that I know the issues we can start looking for what solutions we can make and what problems we can go around with maybe combining ground plans and taking what we need and what we don't need.

  8. I feel like the challenges that we are facing is that some people don't even care about building the set and some people just play around and goofy around then they have no idea what there doing when we get to working because they were paying attention.

Also, I feel like since the measurements are even and odd some of us are struggling with what set to build and the pieces wont add up if we don't have the right measurements.

I feel like we can fix all this by re-measuring the stage and the parts that we need to build the set. Also we can actually listen and pay attention when coach is giving instruction.
