Theatre 3: The Competition

Discuss the challenges you face in the upcoming competition.  What must you do to overcome these challenges?

  1. Some challenges I face with the upcoming competition is movement, pauses, and not misplacing lines when I have to recite one of my paragraphs.

In the scene of Steel Magnolias that Jesse and I are doing, Shelby has just told her mother that she's pregnant. It's a big deal because Shelby could die trying to have this baby. There are moments where the characters face away from each other but I feel like we need more movement than just facing towards each other, facing away, and then repeating the cycle.

When it comes to pauses, I know where to do them, I just need to work on how long they need to be done. The part where my character reveals she's pregnant, I need to add a longer pause. But I always want to hurry up and say it as if I was trying to hurry up and say it because I was too scared to tell her, so I have to change the way my mind wants to do it.

My character, Shelby, has several paragraphs, especially near the end. There is one where she is talking about Jackson wanting a son and I always want to say "he's so cute about the whole thing" after "it's all he ever talks about", but it's supposed to be the other way around. there are a few other places where I need to work on placing the sentences correctly.

  3. Some challenges that i'm facing is memorizing the long paragraphs in the script. It was very different from the original script that I had memorized so I need to do everything I can to remember the right part. Also I need to pace myself while saying my lines because I feel like i'm just rushing over them and I want to audience to understand what i'm saying.

Another challenge is our movements. We're trying to process our movement with our lines and our script doesn't have our stage movement so we have to go along and do what normal people would do. That also means not being awkward around my partner and feel comfortable with her and not stiff.

Some things I can do to overcome these challenges is be comfortable around my partner and talk to her about the movement we should do and how we should do it so that we're both comfortable with each other and our actions. Also really understanding our characters and making sure to stay in character while doing the emotional parts of the scene.
