Theatre 3/4: Performance Project

What 2 categories are you going to enter for your competitive performances in N2?  What are the titles and themes of your pieces? What challenges will you face in bringing these selections to fruition?

What steps do you need to take first to get there?  What are your plans for the first step?

  1. In N2 I would personally not like to attend competition. In the past competitions we were grossly unprepared and embarrassed our-self. Realistically doing competition will not be our main focus due to being in split classes, lack of focus, and possibility of a play. I believe if we have competitions this year we need to spend considerable more time rehearsing not just in front of each other to get real feedback.

With that being said in the second nine weeks I would like to give duo interp another chance. When at competition I find duo interp interesting to watch over other categories. There is also a wider selection of pieces to chose from. I think duo inters could actually benefit the group because you often times have to play off the other person if I line is forgotten, This is very helpful during productions as well.

I would also like to try storytelling. Last year I attempted prose and struggled to find a piece long enough or even interesting. I think our biggest downfall was having cliche pieces or ones we could not truly preform well. With storytelling I am hoping to be more successful.

    1. While competitions may not be our main focus, I believe that a decent amount of focus combined with considerable feedback and criticism could benefit everyone with what they plan to do.

    2. I agree completely with our competitions , because they haven't ever been our "best" work if we're going to be completely honest all we need is a lot and I mean a whole lot of work to get us back on our feet and I think we'll do just fine.

    3. I think N2 i would like to learn more about picking pieces. I will read more and look into things ive read that can be made into a performance. I also think we should look into writing out own pieces.

I would like to try and dedicate after school time to learning more about the basics of performing at competition, as well as practicing in advance. I believe if we all take time from out personal lives to think about competition It will help prepare us.

  2. In N2, I would like to attend competition. I haven't competed in any speech, so I'd love the experience. I want to try storytelling and poetry. I saw people do storytelling and found that it wasn't my style. Besides that, I wanted to try it to get out of my comfort zone.

The poetry I want to perform, "Perhaps the World Ends Here", by Joy Harjo. This has very nice imagery and could really be a good piece. I think poetry is a good starting point for me, there is lots I could do good with it. The next piece is "The Very Hungry Caterpillar", by Eric Carle. There are lots of things I can exarate in this story.

I need to learn how mush I have to do. I have to know the formatting and remembering. The competition spot light is not where I'm most comfortable. I plan to start memorizing right away. There are lots of things I don't know. But I will learn, I will also start by finding the pace and rhythms for the competition.

    1. I think that you choosing "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" would be an absolutely amazing piece for storytelling because it is such a classic.

    2. I believe that your take and mindset on this something that more people should try to have due to it's positive capabilities.

    3. "The very Hungry Caterpillar" would be an amazing storytelling piece like Jay Jay said , because of all the detail and emotions it has I think you'd do great with it as your piece and I wish you good luck with that piece.

  5. In N2, I honestly want to be able to get the theatre program back in shape. Not even necessarily plays or competition, but theatre itself as a whole. However, to answer the question, I'd like to participate in competition, even though I prefer doing plays. A change of scenery would be nice to try though.

I haven't taken much thought into what to perform, other than duet interp. I remember watching my former theatre 4's perform duets and thinking it was pretty cool. If not duet interp then maybe storytelling.

I will admit that my biggest struggle is going to be memorizing a piece of literature thats so long. Other than that, I believe everything else should fall into place.

    1. I agree with your feelings about theatre as a whole right now and where your mindset is with competitions. I also feel like one of my biggest challenges would be memorizing the piece because that is the most important aspect. And once you have the words down you can grow into movement and characterization.

    2. Memorization is hugely important but trust me when I say you are going to want to use the most time focusing on your delivery of the piece so memorization can't take too long.

  6. i want to do my poetry piece that i did last year. I feel that story can go a long way and I remember the judge really liked it and she feels it could have too. the 2nd one is a duo inter with kamil and it's one of the scenes from wicked, scene 15. the poetry piece was "the highway man by Alfred noyes"
i think a hard challenge would be trying to put a lot of effort into these things and still focus on social distancing and covid, a lot of people have a lot going on outside of school.
so the first step i would take is finding a good piece that makes you wanna do your absolute best, and then get to leaning the lines.

    1. I think not a lot of people do poetry so i think this'll be a rewarding experience for anyone who does it. it's a challenge i think you can tackle.

  7. In N2, the competition categories that I would like to compete in are Storytelling and Duet Acting. Duet Acting seemed like it would be a good start as accompanied by Storytelling. When I was in theater 1 I hadn't seen too many people do Storytelling so I wanted to check it out.

The title of my storytelling piece is Rikki-Tikki-Tavi by Rudyard Kipling which has a theme of courage. The second piece that I am going to do is 1-800 by Joseph Sorrentino that explores depth into that opposites can attract. The major challenge that I face is just never having been to a competition before and not really knowing exactly what to do.

Definitely with the time and attention that goes into competition pieces I see that as a challenge but one that can be taken care of. Staying on top of writing and memorization and then characterization that goes along with it is what I am going to have to do. My first step is to get into a mindset to take this on and then use my time wisely.

  8. Personally, I believe will be trying out poetry and storytelling in N2. I've been interested in poetry for a while and I would like to see what I can do. Storytelling to me is similar and I just want to convey a complete story from beginning to end.

The storytelling piece that I'm planning on is "Diary of a Break-Up" by Alex Broun. The piece has many descriptive words for you to paint a picture in your head. The poetry piece at the moment is "Home Burial" by Robert Frost. A piece that consists of the strain on parents from losing a child.

To actually manage this, I would need to get a better feel on both pieces and consistently focus on how I can improve my conversion of the pieces. While I'm not sure how exactly I'm going to improve them I can attempt it from every angle until I get it.

    1. if we perform in front of the class, which i'm sure we will, you could get some really valuable feedback. try practicing in front of others, it really helps.

  9. In the second nine weeks i would like to attend the competitions that are available for me. I would like to do a dramatic interp piece and a duo interp piece. I dont know about some people but i know for a fact that im gonna make the best with the time i have because i dont wanna go down as a quiter in the end.

The Dramatic interp Piece i will be doin is called "Growing up black in amaerica" which is about the an african american male knowing both sides of what happened to him while growing up. My Duo Interp piece is " 1-800" by Joseph Sorrentino and i will be doing this piece with Jay Jay. This one is about a simple phone call to an automated banking system that turns ino a humourous battle of wits between Frank and a computer generated voice.

I plan on doing my absolute best during these compititions to make sure that west creek does not look bad like we recently have been. I plan to work every chance i have with these pieces and i hope i can make some people either laugh or see different points of views from an african americans perspective of how he was raised/ grew up. steps i will take to make this happen is making sure i memorize my lines to the best of my ability and to practice getting out of my comfort zone when it comes to these specific pieces.

    1. I really liked the piece you chose last year and I think if you still know it and can put extra work into it this year it could still be a solid piece for you. Most of the people we saw perform did the same piece over and over, it might not be bad to have a constant.

  10. In the second nine weeks I would like to attend to a competition. I would love to do a powerful poem that will move people and I would love to do a storytelling. I haven't performed a poem and I really want to plus I think it would be fun, also storytelling was one of my first performances so I would love to do storytelling.

The poem I picked is "If Society Was A Person" by Adelaide London. It's about society being a person and how they would act, smell, look like, talk, and be like. The storytelling I picked is "The Little Train That Could" by Watty Piper. It's about a tiny train that thought couldn't make it over the hill, but it did. It gives us a reminder that we think we can't do things, but if we put our minds to it then we can.

The challenges that I will face is remembering the pieces by heart, but if I put my all and give it a 100% then I have confident that I will do good.

  11. In the second nine weeks I would like to do prose and Dramatic Interp zfor competition. I don't think we have been "prepared " with the whole competition with memorizing lines and we'd freeze up and forget what to do next , but life is full of risks so I think we should take some during this time and give it our all.

The piece I picked for Prose is Stolen by Lucy Christopher which is about this 16 year old girl who gets kidnapped in an airport from a 25 year old man and is forced to listen to him in order to survive. And the piece I picked for Dramatic Interp is Speak and It's about this 15 year old who just started in high school she's an outcast and she goes to her first ever high school party and it becomes the biggest mistake she makes in her life.

The challenges I would be facing would be remembering my lines for my pieces and also knowing what movement to do to make the audience interested. And making sure I'm giving my all not just for me , but for the team as well.

  12. I for one am excited to do my best at competitions this year. I will be doing storytelling and duo interp for my performances. My pieces will be an original work titled "Childhood Memories" and the other is a scene from the odd couple.

My short story is about me as a bratty little kid doing stupid things to torture my mom. it is a very expressive and funny piece that really brings out your inner mischievous child. I think funny pieces connect with the judges and stick in their minds more.

The challenges i would be facing would be not being so nervous that i instantly forget everything. i also need to make sure not to go over my time like i did last time and look at the judges and audience to connect with them more.

  13. It is my first year doing cometitions this year and I am verry excited. I am doing a storytelling piece by mark twain and a duet acting peice from the odd couple.

For my storytelling piece i am doing "Eve's Diary" by mark twain. I picked this piece because i think it is funny way of interpeting why was going on in eves mind at the time.

It will be a chalenge to remeber and perfrom the words and dialect written by mark twain. this peice is time durring the bible time so the words and way things are percived are diffrent but i do belive i am up for the challeng. My mom always said "It is never fun if it is to easy for you to give it your all."
