Theatre 3: Competition Preparation

Discuss the challenges you face in your upcoming competition. What steps are you taking to overcome these challenges.

  1. A challenge that Lane and I faced while preparing for Saturday was finding time to practice outside of 7th. We have been practicing during our lunch block. As well as the 30 min prior to Dracula rehearsals.

Another challenge that we faced was memorizing our piece as well as the play Crazytown. What we did to make everything easier on us we chose a piece from the play.

  2. The challenges that me and Vanessa are facing for our piece is the memorization, the prop hunt, and the constant adding to our piece.

We are overcoming the memorization part by reading over our lines over and over again. We are overcoming the prop hunt by looking for certain props in the prop room and bring props to use from home. We are overcoming the constant adding to our piece by just listening to coach and just making sure that our piece is complete. Vanessa and I will be working on all of these issues to try and make our piece come to life.

  3. Preparing for this competition i faced a few challenges. With this being m first competition, i didn't really know what to expect going into it so i kept procrastinating. finally when we pulled it together to practice the piece we chose, we didn't put in that much time, because we didn't really liked our piece. After we decided to trash that piece and i was looking for a new one i found one, but it wasn't long enough.

    1. Hopefully you find a piece that is necessary for you. I know it is frustrating to not like a piece and change it.

  4. The challenge that Emily and I are facing is that we keep adding our piece, so it can have a "solution" to our story so it doesn't stop at an irrelevant point.

For this being our first competition, it is a lot so to say but not really because we been in plays in front of audiences. But now it is only us two and people from other schools and judges. But if we do mess up in front of these people I guess it wouldn't be that bad so to say.. maybe embarrassing but not the end of the world. We will just learn from this for next time.

  5. When preparing for the competition I was honestly unprepared. I hadn't went over or studied my piece. I never met with my partner to rehearse it either, and even though having no time is not a good excuse I could never really get to it. I was not motivated to do it, but at the end of the day the piece was still trash even if me and my partner had rehearsed it every single day for a good 3 hours it still wasn't a good piece.

So I went from doing a duo to a solo piece poem. Honestly glad it happened the way it did. I had a piece but it was to short so I found a new piece, and it was still short so I still kept it. So I looked the day before competition, and found another piece to complement the first one.

  6. The challenges Kaia and I was gonna face was to show the tension and affection in the our roles in the play we chosen. Also, because we wasn't prepared as we should have been we may face some memory problems ,and blocking.

To overcome these challenges we just used the rest of the time we could to practice what we knew, and what we thought needed to change. We also took the advice from coach and our peers to try to overcome these challenges.

  7. A challenge I faced was giving my piece energy and character. I was not really committed to my piece because I thought it was boring and not good enough to be as entertaining as the other competitors pieces. I also did not genuinely have a motivated attitude towards the tournament because I was not excited about my piece.

I will overcome that challenge in the next competition by selecting a piece that I feel has more potential. If I like the piece I will be more committed to it and feel like I can really put effort into it because other people could actually enjoy it also.

  8. The problems that I faced were adding things to the piece that weren't in the script. One of my weaknesses is not being able to interpret and add things meaningfully. I am also an awkward teenager which makes the gay aspect of our piece a little challenging.

In order to get over this obstacle we took advice from coach and added movement that will make it more convincing. Standing stationary isn't entertaining to watch and so we had to walk around and search and block. We also got over the weird nervousness and focused on realizing it is a character that we have to portray and it doesn't reflect us personally.

  9. The problem me and Jada faced was taking it seriously and actually practicing when we were supposed to. I didn't try to characterize at all. I just tried to memorize the lines.

In order to get over the obstacle we listened to what coach was telling us and took it in and practiced with it. We started to take it seriously and tried to get something better each time.
