Theatre 3: Directing Challenges

Discuss the challenges you are facing with FableFest less than 2 weeks away.  What steps must you take as a leader to ensure your troupe's success?

  1. Some of the challenges that I am having with FableFest being less than 2 weeks away is that how we haven't gotten to stage of actually preforming the plays that the group has developed. Another challenge that I am facing is how unprepared we are.

The first challenge is how we haven't practiced with scripts yet. Steps that I am going to take as a leader is I'm going to make sure that Aviana and I's group is more prepared. The next step would be to make sure that they are writing down their cue lines and their lines on an index card that way it is easier for them to study lines. The last step is that while my group is working on our play that they are on all on task and staying in character.

The last challenge is that we have are unprepared. The steps that I will take as a leader to make sure that my group succeeds is that I will make sure that my group stays on task while we are working on the play. Another step to make sure my group is more prepared to make sure that everybody is working on the task instead of playing and messing around. The last step I am going to take as a leader to make sure that my group is more prepared is to know what exactly is happening in the task at hand that way I know exactly how I can help them.

    1. Have you taken steps to work outside of school? Maybe do a video call that way they can practice lines with each other if they all can't stay after school.

  2. A challenge I face as a director is making sure my entire team along with myself is prepared. Less than two weeks is not a lot of time to rehearse, especially when sharing stage rehearsal time with multiple other groups. It is not possible to force my theater ones to rehearse their lines outside of class, so making sure that they all have their part memorized is a challenge. Knowing your part is one of the most important responsibilities you have in group efforts like FableFest because the success of the entire team depends on every member doing their part.

Another challenge I face is my own anxiety. If I appear nervous about FableFest, the theater ones who have to act on stage for the first time during it are most definitely going to be nervous. I have to be a confident leader and encourage my troupe to be enthusiastic regardless of how I feel.

Most of my challenges involve lack of preparation. I can overcome these by checking on the progress of my team often so that I know what needs more work so that we can focus on it when we rehearse. I will do this by frequently sending reminders to our group chat and rehearsing our mini play with and without scripts over the next 2 weeks. If I am confident that my group is well prepared I will be more enthusiastic and an overall better leader.

    1. I agree with you on the last part. I like the reminding the group with little messages here and there Emily and I do that too. it has helped a lot because people tend to forget things but it's our duty to remind them. And their duty to put in the work.

  3. I am not a director of a Fablefest play but I am helping groups out as a whole.

Something that I found challenging is switching between groups and helping both out. Something that is going to challenging is programming the lights when I am not able to see the actual plays unless we have a day for me to do that. The programming part is super easy but I need to see the movements of the play to see what lights should be on.

  4. The biggest challenge I have with fable fest being less then 2 weeks away is how unprepared my group and I are. One of our theater ones have been missing a lot of school. Being such an inexperience director of I am basically another theater one just in a theater 3 class.

I must first speak up and stop being directed and be more of an director.Every last one of the theater ones in my group are capable of putting on the best "Shrek and The Beanstalk" ever!

I will definitely make sure my group is where they need to be , so when the 12th comes "Stop Winking At Me" will get up on stage and perform everything we practiced.

  5. Some challenges that my group is having is how they haven't gone on stage and preformed their pieces. Some of my group is also having trouble with listening to the directors which is me and Emily . Also, my group needs to work on their pieces and practice at home.

First step would be to be more stern with them and show ok all fun and games are over it's time to get serious. I could help them with their pieces and where they should do certain things like make there voice change or a movement. Since some of them have trouble with their lines I could help them make cue cards. Oh staying in character is something my group as trouble with. I would make them talk in their character voice all class period so that it is tuck with them.

So I will make sure that my group is straight for the performance of Fable Fest that is in 2 weeks not only my self but with Emily. To help with our group we will try to practice after school. the reason I say try is because Emily and I can only do so much the group has to put in the effort as well. If they are really interested in this they would do what it takes to make this performance one of a kind.

  6. So, Francis and I are directing fable fest together for the first time, and its nerve racking but not. Because at the beginning it was all fun and games and now we are on week away and everything is going over our heads and this and that. We are basically feeling what our theater 3's felt at the time when we were theater ones. One challenge we are facing is they don't know how big this is for them and not just us. This is when they first act, when their family and friends are watching. Another challenge is one of our characters has not shown up to school in 5 days nor has she done her soliloquy. And she's kinda putting everyone else behind, because she she has words to say and characters don't know their cue lines to come in so Francis and I decided if she doesn't come, I am going to end up playing her part.

I think they should have fun with it but right now is the rehearsal part of it and it should be taken someone seriously. If they need extra help then we will help them , but they are not saying anything , they just goof off and what not. We have finished the classroom stuff and now that we are on stage going through it, they don't know the script nor what the end up the script is because we always end either on page 2 or 3.

I think to help our group out since we are one week away is to have after school rehearsals which we are today after school, but we can't tell them they HAVE to come but if they can't I think they should go home and practice because if they don't want to practice in a group they can on their own.

  7. The biggest challenge I have with fable fest being less then 2 weeks away is how difficult it is to get my group to focus. The reason I say this is because some of my group members are still trying to memorize their soliloquy. And it's very hard to characterize when you don't know your piece to begin with.

Another challenge that I face is trying to figure out what parts won't work when we are actually on stage. When writing the script I imagined how things would be. But the fact that it isn't working out right now is scaring me cause I want my group to be prepared.

The way I will overcome my challenges is by getting my WHOLE group to come into advisory for more practice. Face timing them, practicing after school and holding them accountable for their actions.Because at the end of the day I can't act for them they are going to have to do it for themselves.
