Theatre 4: The Planning Process

What has the process of creating a musical sketch taught you about theplanning and collaboration process?  How would you use this knowledge in future projects?  What would you do differently, and why?

  1. This process has been long and pretty frustrating. It was hard to work with the theater twos because they have been taught that they only have to put in minimal work. I learned that part of collaborating is accepting that not all people will put in the same amount of energy as you do. I also took away that people will agree to get out of something they don't want to do. Specifically an idea can be bad but no one will speak up because they don't want to come up with anything better.

I would use this knowledge to maybe pick more motivated people to be in a group with given that I have a choice. If I cannot pick that then I will use what I have learned about the acceptance. I won't get as frustrated with the people who don't want to work because I trust and know I can do it by myself if need be.

I would do a few things differently. I would allow other directors to suffer by themselves. I was trying to help and support other people since my group was doing fine and I should have let them drown because only the strong survive. I also would pay better attention to who is a reliable cast member. I will see who is always there and who is most motivated to work hard since some people want something really bad but are barely fitted to do the role and hold up the commitment they made.

    1. First paragraph is VERY accurate. Theater 2s still have the theater 1 mindset of "I don't have to do anything in this class because our theater 4 director is just going to do the project for us then tell us what to do on stage."

  3. Creating this musical sketch was a lot easier than creating the sketch for the theater 2s. The smaller the group is, the easier it is to plan together. There wasn't a lot of room for disagreement or negativity. We all just threw in ideas and easily agreed and created a fun sketch.

In future projects, I would try to bring larger groups closer together before working on a project as a whole. I learned that is important to make sure the group has a bond or a shared end goal of some sort. This project is going smoothly because we are a tight group with the same general interests (theater 4s throwing together a fun little skit to host our show). It would be easier with large groups if they all agreed on simple ideas as easily as a smaller group does. Some people are more focused on using the songs that they wanted to use or using the choreography they picked instead of someone else's ideas. With our small group, we just picked the songs and went with the flow.

One thing I would do differently is starting earlier. Our rehearsal time is really just us hoping everyone shows up to the workshops over the weekend. We are basing two of our songs in the mashup around boys and we have yet to get a chance to work with the boys because they have to focus on other sketches. If we had stopped focusing on our theater 2 sketches and started working on this theater 4 sketch weeks ago, we would have rehearsed with the boys by now.

    1. I completely agree with you because it is easier to direct a smaller group but it can be harder to develop a story line with a smaller group. But it is easier to come to a agreement with a smaller group.

  4. The process of creating the musical sketch was very long. My theatre 2 group is very talkative. My group needs to make sure that they are staying on task and not doing nothing. With the planning, my group was making progress but not really playing attention.

For future projects, I would make sure that I am not as chill. Instead I should make sure that my group is staying on task and making sure that my group is doing their work instead of slacking of. Another thing that I will do is make sure that I can be more strict by making sure that I keep an eye on everyone.

One thing that I would do differently is that I would make sure that I know what i ma doing so that way I can become a better leader. Another thing that I would do differently is be more strict with my group. The last thing that I would do differently is making sure my group is staying on task and not goofing around that way we could be more prepared than we actually were/are.
